The translation of "computer" into French is "ordinateur", quite far
from computing or calculation. The story came from François Girard from
IBM France who asked in 1955 his former Professors at the University and
in particular J Perret, a linguist, to find a French name for the
forthcoming "computer"!
In fact, J Perret was proposing a female name like "ordinatrice" instead
of the male "ordinateur" name. But if the root of the name "ordinateur"
is still here in French and hasn't been replaced by a more English name
it is probably because J Perret spent a lot of time on finding the more
rooted name as explained in his deeply thought letter reproduced at
http://linuxazur.monaco.net/html/linux06/2003-07/msg00145.html
(Sorry it is in French).
For the presentation of myself. I am a senior researcher in population
studies with some backgrounds initially in mathematics and physics but
having move to epidemiology and health. I started computing in 1974 at
age of 22 on Univac and Ibm machines in Fortran, trying to integrate
differential equations of explosions of Supernovae. Three weeks before
the defense of this micro-thesis I discovered that a Russian had already
solved the equations in a very nice and elegant way, but the book wasn't
in the lab. Thus all my computing was useless (but I got the
"felicitations" of the jury...). So I am used to useless work and it is
often necessary on Linux.
Cheers,
Nicolas
