Hi,

I asked Yi and Venki about ugly output on text screen when using
video_post (even if video_post is executed without doing suspend/resume)
and GPL status of video_post. I got two answers:

At first, Yi suggests to unset the LCD expansion into the BIOS
(you should type F2 at boot). The screen is smaller but very readable.
It is a nice workaround. Apparently, the console doesn't resume what was
already in the screen memory, but just typing return (or refreshing if
on emacs or whatever) will get a readable prompt as normal. Some
CTL_ALT_F1 or CTL_ALT_F2/CTL_ALT_F1 or CTL_ALT_F7(for X on Mandrake and
many other distros)/CTL_ALT_F1 or chvt 7&&chvt 1 or whatever, may help
getting the screen back on the console (vt 1).

Concerning the status of video_post here is the answer of Venki:
------------
Video_post, is GPL software. video_post is based on x86 emulator that is
already present in X. I made it standalone program anm and use it to do
VGA post.
Anyways, currently I think vgapost as just a immediate workaround. There
are few other long term alternatives that are being worked on. One is to
have a x86 emulator in kernel. Then we can ass a kernel patch to do
video_post and wont need a userlevel utility. Other option us
late_s3_bios patch that is floating around. That is the reason I don't
want to put video_post into rpm just yet. If we don't end up with a
better solution for some time, then I think we can do that.
Venki

Cheers,

Nicolas
