It is great to get such good news. I also participated to bug 1730
(opened by Nils Spengler since almost a year now) some months ago and
forgot my post. So, bugs sent to kernel bugzilla are not forgotten,
that's very nice.
If S4 fully works on Sony Z1 as I pointed out in a previous message, and
even on a production kernel, like Mandrake 10.1 Official (only a few
patches have to be passed to kernel 2.6.8, like the new sonypi module
for resuming well), I think that S3 is on the way to work soon... but is
not fully working today and not on a 2.6.8 kernel.
What I understand from the various posts to bug 1730 and 3670 (from
Bastien Nocera using a Sony S1XP)
is that the command
echo 3 >/proc/acpi/sleep
will suspend correctly to RAM on a 2.6.9 kernel.
But for resuming correctly and in order to get access to the console,
(without the need to ssh the laptop) we must use the command:
echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep && /root/emu/video_post
where video_post is a "tool" from Venkatesh Pallipadi (Intel) posted by
Zhu Yi (Intel) at the same time on bug 3670 (comment #7). But I don't
know what is such a "tool". It seems to be binary. But where is the
source code?
Marks' experience is that if video_post gives access to the screen, it
doesn't give access to the console which in an usable state after resume
(Zhu Yi said that "he only got small screen after resume". But X is
accessible fine (but only if X doesn't use framebuffer).
Venkatesh Pallipadi gives also a kernel patch
(http://bugme.osdl.org/attachment.cgi?id=3961&action=view)
in order to execute /root/emu/video_post after resuming and thus (if I
understand well) to suspend with the standard command
echo 3 >/proc/acpi/sleep .
It has also be pointed out that usb modules did not resume correctly
(comment#23 of bug 1730 from Olaf Krische).
Thus, do we again need a script for S3 suspending/resuming like for S4
to unload the usb module before suspending?
Thanks for all these appreciated informations. I wasn't expecting to
have S4 and soon S3 two months ago.
I am copying this message to the people quoted in this message and to
Venki and Yi Zhu to tell them that our small users group of Sony Z1
owners (30 subscribers today) appreciate their efforts to improve Linux
on such a very nice hardware. I think that most of us are using the
laptop mostly on Linux (am I right?), using various distros, having
different skill levels in kernel knowledge and even in Linux, and
therefore our contribution to Linux resides mostly in testing and
reporting during our free time even if some subscribed people created
new tools like sonypidd or sonyxosd which are included in many
distributions now.
Cheers,
Nicolas Brouard
