Thanks for posting that. It prompted me to give S3 another try,
and this time I got it working. My problem turned out to be just
that I had a "vga=791" grub option, which I think means I was using
framebuffer?


So just for the record:

Sony Z1A Fedora Core 3 (no framebuffer!):
S3 works. Screen is not be functional after resume, unless
I use that video_reset tool mentioned in nils bug report.
And the console is in an unusable state after resume, but X is
working great.
