Sorry, I went to lunch and sent the previous non-edited mail by mistake.
Here is a more decent and hopefully more comprehensive reply.

If the changes of Dmitry Torokhov are small, in terms of source codes,
from Peter Österlund original patch, it is a huge difference for the
user because each time your event number attached to the pad is changing
(just by adding a USB mouse or a replicator or a resume/suspend) you
don't need to modify the N in the former Option "Device"
"/dev/input/eventN" of XF86Config-4 accordingly. This option doesn't
exist anymore. And you can replace the "event" protocol with the former
"auto-dev" protocol as for the true synaptics device:
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"

Well, patch 100 is still not satisfactorily, so we have to wait for a
new version or to debug or to reverse to 96.

Your latest version 23, which includes swsusp2 patch 97 and 98, will not
work (power off is incomplete and you can"t resume).
The solution (still easier than what I did with version 18) is to delete
both patches 97 and 98 in directory 2.6.7-q1.sds23/swsusp2 (and both
symbolic links in patches), to get a new tar file and a new src and rpm.
No time to do it now.
But let us suppose that someone built a new
kernel-sds-2.6.7-1.sds.23mdk(without_patch_swsups2_97_and_98)-1-1mdk.nosrc.rpm
then everyone could do your simplified command:
rpm --rebuild
kernel-sds-2.6.7-1.sds.23mdk(without_patch_swsups2_97_and_98)-1-1mdk.nosrc.rpm
--with
uponly --with win4lin --with swsusp2 --without apic
and get binary rpm with an important chance of success !
Thanks a lot Svetljo, I added your advices into a revised version of my
page at
http://sauvy.ined.fr/~brouard/sony/index.html#2.6.7cooker and made an
volatile addendum.
Cheers,
Nicolas
