Hello back,

waw, thank you! I was about to start an (almost) identical project myself.

I was also thinking of a different approach:
What about writing a XFree input driver which based on some
configuration file( = the mapping between the Fn-Keys and the keysyms),
would sent the Multimedia-Key-press events to the server ? The desktop
manager would then capture them and take action. The advantage is that
we have a unique front-end for all laptops floating around.

Until then, your tool is, of course, the way to go :-)
